New zoning ordinance process deserves everyone's support
In June of 2004, a zoning ordinance crafted in order to open the township's rural areas to large-scale subdivision development was decisively rejected by Elmwood's voters by a 3-1 margin. Since that time, a number of false starts were made on creating an ordinance that would carry out the wishes of the township's voters for zoning ordinance that implements our Master Plan--one that protects the rural character of the township while strengthening and fostering existing neighborhoods.

ECSG and Elmwood's 5 acre zoning standard
Even though the new proposed Elmwood zoning ordinance allows the basic minimum lot size in the Agriculture/Low Density zoning district to remain unchanged from the current 5 acre standard, ECSG's recommendation to the planning commission has been that a 1 unit per 10 acre standard would work more effectively to meet the goals and objectives of our community master plan. A 5 acre standard seems more likely to create large lot residential uses than it is to encourage agricultural or open space uses.
