New zoning ordinance process deserves everyone's support In June of 2004, a zoning ordinance crafted in order to open the township's rural areas to large-scale subdivision development was decisively rejected by Elmwood's voters by a 3-1 margin. Since that time, a number of false starts were made on creating an ordinance that would carry out the wishes of the township's voters for zoning ordinance that implements our Master Plan--one that protects the rural character of the township while strengthening and fostering existing neighborhoods. Now at last a process is underway that promises to deliver just such an ordinance. The Elmwood Township Board of Trustees, still dominated by holdovers from the previous board, has signaled that it will try to obstruct the new ordinance. It will not be enough to draft an ordinance that is fair and forward-looking. Only if the citizens of Elmwood let their voices be heard will the politicians on the Board give the new ordinance the support it needs. Come lend your voice. Even if you do no more than
say that you support the Master Plan and an ordinance that implements a smart
growth policy for Elmwood, you be making an important statement. Click here for previous ECSG editorials. |
